Pond sits in Westwood but actually is owned by Town of Norwood as a backup water supply. It is a kettle pond featuring two "bowls" separated by a berm. When water levels are low the two kettles can be completely cut off from one another. Max depth in both bowls is about 25 feet but much of the pond is less than 7 feet. Bottom is generally sandy but shallower areas can be quite weedy. Lilypads cluster in the shallow northern section of the pond.
Buckmaster is interesting because it fishes like two separate ponds. The deep kettles hold stocked rainbows (some very large) while the shallow areas support warmer water species. Those interested in bass will want to fish the northern section which can be accessed from the fields at the adjacent Sheehan School, however it is best to have a canoe or kayak as shore access is limited.
There is a small parking lot off Pond street that can accommodate about 10 cars and shore access is excellen. The adjacent meadow is a favorite of dog owners and walkers so watch for s-bombs. Due to the easy access and stocked trout this place is popular with the Powerbait and lawn chair crowd who can be found lining the southern shore most mornings after stocking into the late spring.
